What do you think is the best way for kids to learn? Homeschool, public education, or private school? Why? What are the pros and cons of each?

I had amazing plans for some Porcinis I purchased today. I looked at my receipt, and I was charged for King Butter Mushrooms instead of Porcinis. I thought I got away with a good deal, (considering that these mushrooms were considerably less) however, I'm beginning to wonder if I did buy the wrong mushroom after all. I am having a hard time finding information on this mushroom online, and I'm having less luck finding photos.

These mushrooms have a brown cap, with yellowish brownish gills and a white stipe. There isn't really a smell to them, but that may be due to refrigeration and age.

Have any of you heard of King Butter Mushrooms? If so, how are they different than Porcinis? Maybe I can alter my recipe to better cater to their flavors...

Ok, pretty sure the topic of children hula hooping lit fireworks hasn't been covered in the Booj yet.

This is my friend's almost-8-year-old, hula-hooping fireworks using a firehoop that used to belong to his mother, but now belongs to him. (linked w/ her permission)

His parents are part of the burner community (like Burning Man) and, as his mom puts it, "it's about like a normal kid taking up football like his dad!" This kid's something of a celebrity in the burner community!

Take into account that:

1. He practiced using an unlit hoop for a long time before he was allowed to use a lit hoop.

2. He hooped with a lit hoop many times (his mother estimates about 20 times over the past year) and demonstrated that he can follow the safety rules.

3. He was not allowed to perform any tricks w/ a lit hoop, waist hooping only, until recently, and has continue waist-hooping only by choice because he doesn't feel he's ready to start doing basic tricks.

4. He has not been hurt while hooping fire/fireworks, including instances where he's dropped the hoop, because he followed the proper safety protocol.

5. His statement on hooping fireworks: "I'm just a little bit scared, but I can handle it. I trust myself."


Is this an example of a parent encouraging her child to take risks within his comfort level in a quasi-controlled environment OR is it an example of an irresponsible parent putting her child's safety at risk?

Would you allow your child to hoop fire or fireworks under the circumstances and at the age described above? Under any circumstances? At any age?

What if this were an activity s/he wants to pursue professionally (on stage, at festival performances, or in a circus)?

I have a question regarding hard boiled eggs.

It seems to be hit or miss around my house, sometimes they turn out perfect and peel without a problem, but most times it seems that the yolks are slightly undercooked and a bitch to peel, losing most of the whites, cracking, etc....

I thought maybe it was the method I use, (or the pot, a nonstick interior, and all clad type) boil H2O, as soon as it starts to bubble from the bottom of the pan, add eggs, set timer for 10 minutes, take out and put in cold H2O, once cooled peel.

Hubby says you should put them in the fridge to cool, then peel?

I normally buy the brown organic cage free eggs (not that it should matter) and yesterday I was making potato salad, boiled the eggs (brown) and they were horrible, I could not even peel them! So hubby ran up to the little store and bought another dozen, and this time he boiled them....pretty much using the same method (his) but he placed them in the fridge to cool.

Once they were cold, he tried to peel them (these were regular white eggs) and same results, slightly undercooked...but a PITA to peel!

Thank goodness I was not making deviled eggs...they would have been pretty ugly looking! ~haha~

So, my question is pretty obvious here.....

Please tell me your method of making Hard Boiled Eggs!

edit: I forgot to mention, that when hubby was making his dozen, he upped the time to 12 minutes (since they were not done...I think he put them in a bit too soon and the H2O was not at a rapid boil)....but it's the peeling part that was a nightmare!

Queen Sized Mattresses

HI.

I have queen sized mattresses that is still useable. It has few rips
from moving in and out in the moving truck. And has a chocolate milk
spill from one of my children. Needs to be pick up in Shit City near
S. Hell st. Also have boxspring that goes with it but one of the wood
underneath is broken but repairable. All you need is one small piece of
wood and replace it then it will be good. MUST pick it up tonight or it
will go to dumpster tomorrow morning.

До начала, я хочу написать, что моя жизнь неплохая и обычно мне не очень грустно. Обычно я чувствую себя нейтрально и нормально. Но я пишу в ЖЖе, чтобы думать и выражать себя. Часто, когда мне надо выражать, мне грустно - значит, что я грустно пишу. Я не всегда емо бой, ха.

Так, я не понимаю, что было со мной недавно. Я не могу долго спать: например в пятницу я спал с 0330 до 0700, проснулся, потом спал с 1300 во 1730. Сегодня было так, и четверг тоже. До этого, я не мог спать вообще, если не выпил вино. Фу. Значит, что недавно я просыпаю обеду и иногда ужину. Я нечасто ем, но неважно потому что я нечасто голодным. Я не знаю что делать об этом. Не мог спать, не хочу есть. Мне нечего хотеть делать тоже. Нет, не правда - я хочу лежать на кровати и смотреть телевизор целый день обычно.

Это чувство чуть-чуть знакомый - я чувствовал так в Вильямсбурге, только там было очень сильнее. Слава Богу что я не так здесь. Мне лучше, но все равно волнуюсь потому что я боюсь, что я буду становиться как я был там, и сейчас спрошу себя о том, как я могу чувствовать счастливо? Я чувствовал себя счастливо; я знаю, что я могу опять. Я просто не знаю как. Я верил, что я знал почему мне было ужасно грустно в университете, но теперь я уже не знаю. Надо думать и писать об этом.

Ну, мне было счастливо в Питере и до этого в Хьюстоне, хотя я сейчас в Хьюстоне и мне не счастливо. Я знаю, почему мне было счастливо в России. Я делал, что я хотел делать - учился русский язык и жил в России. Я нашел любовь, конечно, но по-моему мне бы было счастливо без ее. Мне было так до ее, во всяком случае. И до этого, в Хьстоне. . . я ожидал уехать. Я ожидал делать что я хотел делать. Может быть, именно так. Делая что я хочу или ожидая, мне счастливо. Если нет, не счастливо. И сейчас, я не знаю что я хочу делать. Вы знаете (если вы раньше читали мой ЖЖ) что мое будущее очень неясный. У меня есть выборы, но я не знаю какой выбор будет самый хороший, и на самом деле я даже не знаю какие выборы хорошие вообще. Я неуверенный, и по-моему, эта неуверенность исток моей грусти. Мне надо искать и найти что я хочу делать, или, черт, что я могу делать. Я не знаю об этом тоже.

I'm not sure if something like this has been posted recently, didn't see anything but that doesn't always mean anything.

Do you think autism is being over diagnosed?
I understand that autism is real and happening, but do you think that we sometimes " over diagnose " it. The reason I am asking is because I am a teacher assistant and right now work in the building with children from 2mo-3yrs. Children all grow and develop at different ages, some faster or slower than others. I hear so many parents freak out over their kids tho, I mean, its good to freak out, it shows that you care and are concerned for your child, but some people are like, my son isnt speaking well, he must be autistic! Some of my collegues are the same way! It upsets me. Autism does NOT equal stupidity I know that , but what if maybe your child is gifted and cant express it at this age?Why dont we try to look at another reason instead of automatically assuming its autism? More and more children are "becoming" autistic, so much so that it is by definition an epidemic, but how do we really know that that is whats really up?

hi there - i'm hoping someone can help with this. my husband and i bought our first home recently, and moved in about 6 weeks ago. the house is in pristine condition - new windows, carpet, fresh paint, beautiful renovated kitchen etc. the seller is a contractor and has been ridiculously helpful, to the point of coming over a few times to help us fix things.

here's the problem. a few weeks ago, we noticed a weird smell coming from the laundry room. i don't know how to describe it - it sort of smells like wet grass, but grosser. at first we only smelled it when my husband did laundry (so weird, when i did it we didn't smell anything - it was like the settings he was using - different than mine - were causing it?) today i walked into the house and could smell it immediately (the laundry room is at the bottom of the stairs, directly below the entryway). it's disgusting.

we're not sure what to do. could it be a dead animal? if so, where? we've scoured the room with a flashlight. if it's there, wouldn't it smell all the time? could it be the pipes? mold? any ideas of what to do or who to call would be MUCH appreciated. thanks!
